Second Fire Guts House - 11.13.2006
On Monday November 13, 2006 at 4:44 am, the Monroe Fire Department was called to the 1100 block of 14th Ave for an attic fire. This was the second call to the home in as many days. Upon arrival, crews found fire through the roof in the middle of the house. An interior attack was initiated, but was not effective. Crews were pulled out of the house after part of the roof collapsed. Crews then began a defensive attack with four hose lines and an elevated master stream from the aerial. Crews attempted to gain access to the attic area since there were multiple roof lines and attic spaces created from remodeling over the years. After opening things up and a defensive attack, the fire was controlled. Crews then entered the building again to perform overhaul and check for hot spots. During the investigation, it was determined that sparks and embers fell through an open space in the wall which was covered with plaster and drywall. The fire then rekindled and traveled through the balloon frame construction to the attic. Crews were on scene for approx 6 hours. No injuries were reported. The house and contents were a total lost.
